I am sure by now you have all seen the previews for Alex. Inc while watching some of ABC’s newest TV shows. I don’t know about all of you but I am super excited about the return of Zach Braff on network TV again. Not only will Zach be starring as the main character in the show he is the executive producer of the show.
Last month while I was in LA we were able to sit down and speak with Zach Braff, Tiya Sircar (plays “Rooni”), and Matt Tarses (executive producer). Matt Tarses is writer and executive producer. Zach Braff is director and executive producer. John Davis and John Fox are executive producers of the series, from Davis Entertainment, as are Alex Blumberg, Chris Gilberti and Matt Lieber (Gimlet Media) in association with Sony Pictures Television and ABC Studios.
We talked about how the show came to be, and what the show was about. To give you a little bit of information on the show Alex. Inc is based on the podcast StartUp, Alex Schuman (Zach Braff, “Scrubs”) is a brilliant radio journalist, husband and father of two who is about to do something crazy – quit his job and start his own company. He quickly discovers it’s going to be a lot harder than he thought. Zach Braff stars, directs and is executive producer with Matt Tarses (“Scrubs”) and Davis Entertainment (“Dr. Ken,” “Blacklist”).
I was able to preview the first episode from Alex. Inc, you will not be disappointed I was laughing throughout the entire time! What I love about the show is that it is a good family show that the whole family can sit down and enjoy together. So often I have to send my kids to their room and put on a movie, or a show for them to watch. Since most of the shows I watch are full of adult humor, or have violence.
Another aspect of the show I really liked and, I am sure many of you will connect with is the fact that show incorporates multicultural backgrounds. I know growing up Hispanic I never really got to see any multicultural families on TV, so I love that the show has integrated that into their story. It will be fun to be able to teach my kids about certain Indian traditions like Holi, and other celebrations the Indian culture has.
Family was a big theme in creating the storyline in Alex. Inc Zach Braff said “I’m an uncle and I have a lot of godchildren one thing that kept coming up and, I know you all can relate is that even though there’s so much great TV out now, I kept hearing there’s not a ton that we all want to watch together. We all love these shows that you can’t watch with your kids and your kids all have their shows that they love to watch. But a theme that kept coming up as the producer in me was a theme that, after dinner before we put our kids down, there’s not a ton of content that we all want to watch together. Obviously ABC’s great at it with Blackish and Modern Family and stuff like that. So, I felt like this was a great space to do it in.”
Tiya Sircar who plays “Rooni” in the show Zach Braff’s wife, told us how the producers and everyone were very involved in having everything look authentic. Since Tiya has an Indian background they went to her for advice on what types of teas and customs the use in that culture. She said “These two guys (Matt and Zach) specifically were like, look, you know, we want this to be as, accurate a portrayal as an Indian-American family or an Indian-American character as possible. So, even if it’s down to like the right kind of tea that they’re drinking, I was said that’s good because we are very particular about tea. So, I really appreciate how much of an effort, you know, producers and writers have made to make this authentic and not just sort of a stereotypical idea of what an Indian-American family looks like. So, thanks, guys.”
